Contemporary dance is a new trend in modern dance which combines elements of Western dance (classical, jazz, modern) and the Eastern art of movement (qigong, yoga, Tai Chi Chuan). Contemporary dance focuses on self-expression more than a defined form or style. It contains elements of ballet, but without the historical prescribed style. Contemporary dancers perform unique dances that are all their own. Dances include the contrast of strain and relaxation, movement and sudden stops, ups and downs, and breathing work. The dancer does not follow a script, but listens to the voice of the body, which expresses a profound emotional experience and direction. There are no identical dances, even from the same dancer, and even when dancing as a pair.
